Class Work
Every morning students begin their day with the SMART START. This self-directed, independent work time includes basic skills such as manuscript and cursive writing, MAKING WORDS from a given list of letters and Math Remembering.
The SMART START usually includes an additional WARM-UP page. These skill sheets help to reinforce information presented in class. This could be anything from addition and subtraction practice, decoding secret messages, Mad Libs or word search to reinforce vocabulary and spelling skills.

Classwork Folder
Each student has a CLASSWORK FOLDER in their desk. Any things that we are working on in class and are not completed go in this folder. This is used for SMART START papers, WARM-UPs and classroom assignments that still need to be worked on. One side of the folder is for incomplete work and the other side is for completed work that does not need to be turned into the tray. This is checked periodically. Work is then turned in for grading or is marked as complete and returned home.
Grading
Papers will have one or two marks. The first is a symbol indicating overall effort.
Star= Personal Best/all goals met
Check= Adequate progress with good effort
Minus= Needs to work toward completion
The second mark will correspond to content using the report card grading system.
3= Grade level content/goals met
2= Progressing on grade level content/goals
1= Little evidence of grade levelcontent/goals
4= Advanced- content/goals above grade level
I place the 4 (four) last because the goal that is set for grade level completion is a 3 (two). A 4 is
given only for content and goals that are above and beyond grade level expectations.
